Wisconsin Man Sets New World Record For Largest Grizzly Ever Killed By A Hunter
A bear shot in Alaska last year officially set the new world record for a hunter-killed grizzly and is a stunning trophy, an expert Wyoming hunter said.
It’s definitely not a “meathead” bear, Guy Eastman of Cody — who has hunted grizzlies in Alaska and Canada — told Cowboy State Daily.
He was referring to how sometimes bears can have large heads, but only average-sized skulls. And skull measurements are what determine a bear’s trophy status.
Brian van Lanen shot the male bear, estimated to be 20-25 years old, in September 2024. He was guided on a combination moose and grizzly hunt near Norton Sound, Alaska, according to an announcement from the Boone and Crockett Club (B&C), confirming that the bear set a new record for the largest grizzly ever killed by a hunter.
The largest grizzly skull ever officially recorded by B&C came from a skeleton that was discovered in Alaska after the bear had died from natural causes.
No Small Feat To Make B&C Record Books
The record-setting hunter-killed grizzly is truly impressive, Eastman said.
“That’s huge. Huge,” he said in reaction to the bear’s offi

Hi,
I recently received an email from my wifes’ work regarding a supposed grizzly bear attack in Alaska. Where upon a 14 foot grizzly bear was shot to death by a ranger out deer hunting. It came with three photographs, 1] displaying overall size of grizzly and hunter together, 2] displaying size of paw and 3] graphic portrayal of hiker practically eaten.
forgive my morbidity on this, but can anyone verify this story, which l have pasted below:

The following (first two) pictures are of a guy who works for the US Forest Service in Alaska and his trophy bear. He was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy unloaded his 7mm Mag Semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him.
The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several
times in the head. The bear was just over one thousand six
hundred pounds.

Bella Twin was a calm, quiet, clear-headed Cree woman with a trap line. May 10, 1957, she killed a massive grizzly bear with her Cooey Ace #1 .22. That was near Slave Lake, Alberta, and the bear Twin killed turned out to be a world record that stood for a good long time. That was seven years before my dad held me for the first time, a five-foot-nothing woman who lived on the land squeezed the trigger on her single-shot rabbit gun and put a .22 rimfire round through the eye of a grizzly bear at close distance. The bear dropped dead, but because Twin knew what she was up against––put seven more rounds into the bear skull––seven insurance shots.
Smart lady.
There has been a lot of speculation over the intervening years about what exactly happened that day there on the trapline. I’ll add one more speculation. In 1953, the likelihood of a trapper using Long Rifle .22 rimfire ammunition while trapping, was, well, let’s say, unlikely. I’ll bet a crisp fifty-dollar bill that they were .22-shorts. A trapper neither needed nor wanted the extra velocity of the Long Rife rimfire rounds for two reasons: undamage

The Hoax
Over the past few weeks, several well-meaning readers sent me an e-mail with a story and photos, supposedly of a new world record grizzly bear killed in Alaska.
According to the internet story, a forest-service worker was deer hunting when a huge bear charged him from 10 yards away. The man emptied his semi-automatic 7mm magnum rifle into the bear, killing it in the nick of time. It dropped dead just a few feet from him.
It was reportedly 12 feet, 6 inches — at the shoulder, no less — and weighed at least 1,600 pounds. A new world record, the story said. Standing, it supposedly could look inside the gutters of an average, single-story home, without using a step ladder.
This blood-thirsty monster allegedly was responsible for killing several people, and one of them was found, half-eaten in the bear’s den, not far from where it charged the hunter. A gruesome photo, supposedly of the alleged victim, was included. Wow! A man-eating, world-record bear, charging a hunter and dropping dead just a few feet from
