Walt Disney World Resort is full of hidden gems and secrets that make visiting again and again a treat! One of these secrets is a unique souvenir that is often overlooked – the cut-paper silhouette. But what exactly is it, and where can you get one?

Cut-paper silhouettes are portraits, generally cut in profile, that are made from black card stock and then pasted on a light background, and often framed. As a silhouette mimics the shape an object makes in shadow, there is very little detail, with only the outline forming any sort of shape.

An art style dating back to ancient times, silhouettes are a great way to memorialize a person at a specific point in his or her life. They were first seen on Ancient Greek and Roman urns depicting famous battles, but cut-paper silhouettes gained significant popularity throughout the 18th and 19th centuries as an affordable alternative to painted portraits or miniatures. Although the invention of photography stifled the art form’s growth, it can still be found today – like at Magic Kingdom!

How to Take the Best Photo

To capture a perfect silhouette, take a clear right-side profile picture of the subject. The subject should be standing 4 feet away from the camera in front of a plain wall, with the camera positioned at their eye level. Make sure the subject remains still and does not smile, and that the photo captures their entire head and hair. If you’re unsure, you can send several photos, and our artists will choose the best one

As you walk around Disney World, you may see carts selling silhouettes in black frames. This custom souvenir is a Disney tradition that goes back to the early days of Disneyland itself, and it’s one of the most affordable personalized mementos at Disney World. Hand-cut by Disney artists on black cardstock, they can be purchased with or without a frame.

Sitting for a silhouette portrait takes only a minute or two. You sit still while the artist cuts the black paper to match the profile of your face. It’s pretty incredible to watch them work! They’re very skilled, and you’ll find the same Cast Members cutting the portraits over many years. We’ve seen stories of people who had their first silhouette cut in childhood, and their child’s first silhouette cut by the same artist decades later.

The artists actually use two sheets at once, so you’ll get two mirror-image silhouettes. You can display your portrait facing in either direction – or keep one and give the other to another family member. The artists can cut profiles of sleeping children (which is sometimes easier if you have a squirmer). They can do profiles of multiple people at once
