outbreak suspending the 2020 MLB season, we’re rewatching the three
San Francisco Giants
postseason runs, game-by-game, on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday nights at 6 p.m. PT, with a gamethread for each.
The San Francisco Giants pulled off the nearly impossible by winning six straight elimination games to advance to their second World Series in three years. After falling behind the Cincinnati Reds 2-0, they won three straight games — all on the road — to advance to the NLCS. There they fell behind the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1, but once again rattled off three straight wins.
To the World Series they go, where they meet the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers went 88-74 on the year, beat the Oakland A’s 3-2 in the ALDS, and swept the New York Yankees 4-0 in the ALCS.
The series starts in San Francisco.
The Giants are kicking things off with unexpected NLCS hero Barry Zito, who finished the year with a 15-8 record, a 4.15 ERA, a 4.49 FIP, and 114 strikeouts in 184.1 innings.

I’d like to thank the Giants for having special ceremonies on two of the last three Saturdays so that I had a great excuse not to write about the actual 2022 team. 🙂 That said, they did beat the Pirates last night, so good for them–nice outing for Carlos , nice game by Yaz (homer and “double” misplayed by Bryan Reynolds, hit the ball hard three times)
I was at spring training in late March 2012 when I saw a Tweet from rookie Giants beat writer Alex Pavlovic: Eric Surkamp had been scratched from his start in Scottsdale that day with an arm injury. Why should we care about this? Well, Barry Zito had been so terrible in camp (after a bad and injury-marred 2011 season) that one Chronicle writer started a rumor during spring training that he was going to be DFA’d with three full years to go on his disastrous contract.
