Worlds of Fun Kansas City Souvenir Map

After buying the Dallas Texans NFL franchise and moving the team to Kansas City, Lamar Hunt sought to expand business operations in his adopted hometown. He helped to open the Worlds of Fun amusement park in 1973, in the midst of a boom of theme park construction taking place across the United States. Worlds of Fun expanded quickly, with an adjacent waterpark (Oceans of Fun) opening in 1982, the largest in the world at the time.

This souvenir bird’s eye view was designed and produced by Citigraph, Inc. of Raleigh, North Carolina in 1989. Six themed areas tangentially related to Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days are noted – Scandinavia, Europa, Orient, River City, Americana, and Africa. Dozens of rides, amusements, restaurants, games, and guest services are illustrated and individually labeled across the map. Highlights include The Python Plunge, Orient Express, Fury of the Nile, and the Timber Wolf.

The verso features an imposing drawing of this huge wooden coaster, which opened the same year as publication and reached speeds of over 50 MPH.

Welcome to
Worlds of Fun
! This Kansas City classic isn’t just about thrills – it’s a weird and wonderful place since way back in 1973. Get ready for a day that’s a little bit retro, a little bit wild, and all kinds of fun.

Forget perfect lawns and shiny rides. Worlds of Fun has personality. The park is split into themed “worlds” – think Africa, a cartoonish Europe, and of course, Planet Snoopy. Some are cheesier than others, but it all adds to the charm.

Love roller coasters? Mamba and Patriot will give you the good kind of fear. If water’s your thing, find classics like Viking Voyager or get competitive on the Riptide Raceway. Worlds of Fun throws some awesome parties too. Halloween Haunt is seriously spooky, and WinterFest is pure Midwest magic.
